Galaxy Girl

Galaxy Girl

I’m not much of a painter but when I saw the My Universe kit and saw the celestial theme I knew I wanted to try something a bit different in my Travelers Notebook. My daughter is obsessed with anything that has a galaxy print or theme to it so I knew right away what photo I wanted to pair with my spread. I removed the background of my photo prior to printing it because I wanted the photo and the painted background to be the focus and not the distracting background of the photo. I love this more art journal look, it’s definitely something different than I normally would have done and I loved stretching myself in a different way.

I started this project by working on the watercolor background. As I mentioned above I’m not a painter but I can usually push around watercolors to get the desired effect. I spent a few days adding layers and layers of paint until it had the depth I was looking for. I added in some white and silver paint splatters to add even more texture to the background. I also added in a few of the simple star stamps and the star cluster stamp as you can see here. Adding in just a few additional shapes helped break up the background and kept it from looking to flat.

I knew that I wanted to keep the spread fairly simple but I also wanted to add in some additional stamping. I played around with some scraps of my background to see if stamping directly on the painted page would work and it would have but it wouldn’t have been enough of a pop. I decided to stamp on a piece of vellum and that made it stand out just enough to not compete but still be legible.

I cut the vellum into the shape of a tag and used a punch to create a reinforcer out of a scrap piece of the background. When a background is this busy you really can’t add too much more but I loved the mirror star shape stickers that came in the kit and scattered a few around for more interest.

I just love how the background and this whole spread came out and I just love the sentiments of these stamps. The fact that it’s one of the things my daughter loves right now is such a totally bonus.
