Summer Reads by Barbara Picinich
Hello everyone, Barbara here to share a travelers notebook spread I made using the Bookworm Travelers Notebook Kit. I love to read and like many people my reading really ramps up during the summer months. I guess it’s the slower days that make me feel like I can read more easily. At the time I made this spread I had read four books from the end of May thru mid July. When contemplating how to document what I was reading the Bookworm kit landed on my door. Tina did such a great job on this kit and I really loved all of her hand drawn icons and the paper with the little library cards was especially inspiriting to me. I ended up doing some digital work with the kit papers in order to extract one of the books to make my own little mini book as you will see below.
The first step in creating the mini book that would hold the books I have read this summer I opened the digital .pdf of printable papers and just cropped it from the rest of the paper. I didn’t worry too much about the size I just wanted to remove that one card as my first step. After I had cropped it I cleaned up the edges a bit so it was a clean white background. I laid the whole layout out on my computer to get a general idea of how large I needed to print out the library to make a book that was just the right size to fit onto my spread. I also removed the text from one of the cards from the main Breakfast Favorites kit as you can see here. At this point in my process I had this general layout as you can see here.
My next step was to stamp out my title on the card that I had altered. By removing the text it gave plenty of space to type out my title, I used the word summer from the Summer Fun stamp set and I then added in the reading list from the Bookworm kit and the book was better stamp which is a cute one to fill in extra space. Prior to printing out my altered card I added in some simple text listing out the dates.
To hold my finished little book I cut down a small glassine bag so that the top edge of the book stuck out from the edge so that it made it easy to grab and remove. I added a few of the kit stickers to the front which I loved.
To created my actual book I measured my altered library card and it was roughly 2.625” x 3.5” so I created pages using a thick vellum that were approximately 5.5” x 3.625” that I folded down the middle. I also cut a cover page from simple cardstock so that I could adhere my altered library card to. I stapled the whole thing together down the middle with a long arm stapler.
Lastly, I printed out the photos I have been taking of the book covers and added one on each of the pages. I used the stamps and also cut out some of the icons from the kit paper and added them to the left side of the page.
I love how this turned out and I love how interactive it is. I intentionally left a few extra pages in my little book since I’m not quite done with my summer reads for the season. I can’t wait to add them to my little book as I finish them. I have until the end of August to add more so I need to get reading!
I hope you have fun with this kit and I hope you use it to document your summer reads too.
